- Pipeline USA & Account Information to change your password, see how many
- hours you've spent on-line, get the latest newsgroup list, see who else is
- on-line, write a description of yourself for others to see, change your
- payment plan, and many others.

- ELECTRONIC MAIL

- Pipeline USA offers you access to electronic mail on the Internet. When you
- connect to Pipeline USA, a window will automatically pop up showing you a
- listing of the electronic mail ("email") waiting for you. You can also
- access your mailbox by clicking on the "Mail" icon and selecting the "inbox"
- folder.

- Your email address begins with your username and ends with @usa.pipeline.com.
- For example, if you are user "doe", your email address would be
- doe@usa.pipeline.com.

- To write a message, click on the "Write" icon just beneath the "Mail" icon.
- You will need to know the email address of the person you wish to send mail
- to. Email addresses are generally of the form

- For example, the support email address is

- SHORTCUT: If the person you are sending an email to is also a Pipeline USA
- member, you can just type in their username and leave off the
- @usa.pipeline.com.

- EXPLORE THE INTERNET

- The Internet is by all definitions enormous, and it's growing everyday.
- Luckily there are reference guides and tools to help you find what you are
- looking for.

- Search tools with names like "Veronica", "Archie", "Jughead", and "Gopher"
- are invaluable for helping you find information. You can also use one of
- the many "search engines" found on the World Wide Web such as "Yahoo",
- "Lycos", or "WebCrawler". They are all available through Pipeline USA.

- To get started, click on the first item in the main menu, "Finding Things on
- the Internet".

- Pipeline USA provides 9 categories to help you begin your Internet surfing
- adventure. Each category includes popular web and gopher sites for each area
- of interest and are updated often. Categories are: Finding Things on the
- Internet; Hot & Cool Internet Sites; Entertainment & Games; Family,
- Lifestyles & Education; Adventures, Art & Culture; Sports, Health & Fitness;
- News, Government & Reference; Business, Finance & Careers. Click on your
- favorite category for more fun choices.

- NEWSGROUPS
- -----------------------------------------------------

- The USENET "news" system is a collection of discussion groups on any and
- every topic you can imagine. There are currently over 14,000 USENET
- "newsgroups," with the number growing daily. Your Pipeline USA software is
- initialized with several newsgroups to get you started. Explore the
- thousands of newsgroups that proliferate the Internet. Interested in a
- specific subject? Chances are very good that a news group already exists
- for you to share your views and benefit from the views and advice of others.

- If you find participation in the wide world of USENET intimidating, we
- suggest you start out getting your feet wet by participating in Pipeline
- USA's own newsgroups (listed under the category "local"). Meet some of your
- fellow subscribers and feel free to jump right into the conversation. When
- you feel ready to step into the actual USENET newsgroups, the world will be
- waiting for you!

- There are several Pipeline-specific newsgroups:

- Click on the newspaper icon to get to news groups.

- HINT: Update your newsgroup lists! Click on the News Icon. From the
- "Actions" pull down menu select "Add a new group." Then select Download
- the Newsgroup List. Pipeline will download the current newsgroup list when
- you select the category of the groups you are interested in. You can then
- scroll through that list to find the groups that interest you.

- THE WORLD WIDE WEB

- The World Wide Web is one of the Internet's coolest features. It offers a
- graphical, easily navigable, "view" of the Internet. Each web page has
- links to other web pages to provide endless hours of surfing the web. You
- can get access to the World Wide Web through Pipeline USA's own web browser,
- which is the "Web" icon on the right of the main menu. You will also see
- other items in Pipeline USA menus that have little web icons next to them.
- These are other points where you can directly access the world wide web.

- IRC - Internet Relay Chat
- -----------------------------------------------------

- At any time during the day and night there are thousands of people partying,
- chatting with each other in Internet Relay Chat. These are people from all
- over the world gathering together to talk about anything and everything.
- They create "channels" or "chat-rooms" with names in keeping with what
- they're talking about. Most are open and everyone is encouraged to join in
- the fun, typing back and forth to each other. In any channel there e can be
- many conversations going on at the same time, but the participants know who's
- talking to whom! By clicking on Internet (Chat IRC) from the Pipeline main
- menu, you too can join in the fun.

- WINSOCK
- -----------------------------------------------------

- Winsock allows you to use various Winsock compliant Internet applications
- such as Netscape, Mosaic, mIRC, RealAudio, and WS_FTP. While Pipeline USA
- does supply you with many useful Internet features, you may want to explore
- using additional ones.

- BELLS & WHISTLES
- -----------------------------------------------------

- Pipeline's "startup" bookmark will automatically go to any web page or gopher
- menu that you tell it to. Once you get to a place on the Internet that you
- want to frequent, click on "Bookmarks!" from the pulldown menu and the a
- bookmark for that location will be added to your bookmark file. To put it in
- the Startup folder, click on Bookmarks!, find the desired entry and drag that
- bookmark into the Startup folder. Pipeline will start it up every time you
- log on.

- UUencoded newsgroup articles -- alt.binaries newsgroups which contain
- pictures and graphics can be decoded so you can view them or save it if it's
- a file. All you need to do is highlight the file you want to get, select get
- UU-encoded articles under the "Action" pull-down menu and follow the
- instructions in the window.

- See who is on-line with you, by city, or by username by clicking "Pipeline
- USA & Account Information."

- A great way to learn about others' interests and possibly make new friends is
- to create a personal profile so that others can see what you have to say
- about yourself. Tell others who you are, what you do, and what you like!

- Pipeline's Talk feature lets you "page" another Pipeline user for a private
- 2-way chat! From the main menu click "Services", Talk (chat with someone).

- Pipeline has a sophisticated mail filtering system that allows you to
- redirect or save messages and newsgroup postings based upon who they're from,
- the date, or the subject.
