  8. the World Wide Web, Newsgroups, and electronic mail.  Enjoy 14 free days of
  9. unlimited Internet usage using Pipeline USA.

  15. The most important thing to remember in using Pipeline is that we're here

  35. Pipeline USA makes it easy to manage your own account housekeeping.  Click on
  36. Pipeline USA & Account Information to change your password, see how many
  37. hours  you've spent on-line, get the latest newsgroup list, see who else is
  38. on-line, write a description of yourself for others to see, change your
  39. payment plan, and many others.

  42. ELECTRONIC MAIL

  45. Pipeline USA offers you access to electronic mail on the Internet.  When you
  46. connect to Pipeline USA, a window will automatically pop up showing you a
  47. listing of the electronic mail ("email") waiting for you.  You can also
  48. access your mailbox by clicking on the "Mail" icon and selecting the "inbox"
  49. folder.

  51. Your email address begins with your username and ends with @usa.pipeline.com.
  52. For example, if you are user "doe", your email address would be
  53. doe@usa.pipeline.com.

  55. To write a message, click on the "Write" icon just beneath the "Mail" icon.
  56. You will need to know the email address of the person you wish to send mail
  57. to.  Email addresses are generally of the form
  58.

  65. SHORTCUT:  If the person you are sending an email to is also a Pipeline USA
  66. member, you can just type in their username and leave off the

  73. The Internet is by all definitions enormous, and it's growing everyday.
  74. Luckily there are reference guides and tools to help you find what you are
  75. looking for.

  77. Search tools with names like "Veronica", "Archie", "Jughead", and "Gopher"
  78. are invaluable for helping you find information.  You can also use one of
  79. the many "search engines" found on the World Wide Web such as "Yahoo",
  80. "Lycos", or "WebCrawler".  They are all available  through Pipeline USA.

  82. To get started, click on the first item in the main menu,  "Finding Things on
  83. the Internet".

  85. Pipeline USA provides 9 categories to help you begin your Internet surfing
  86. adventure.  Each category includes popular web and gopher sites for each area
  87. of interest and are updated often.  Categories are: Finding Things on the
  88. Internet; Hot & Cool Internet Sites; Entertainment  & Games; Family,
  89. Lifestyles & Education; Adventures, Art & Culture; Sports, Health & Fitness;
  90. News, Government & Reference; Business, Finance & Careers.  Click on your
  91. favorite category for more fun choices.

  94. NEWSGROUPS

  97. The USENET "news" system is a collection of discussion groups on any and
  98. every topic you can imagine.  There are currently over 14,000 USENET
  99. "newsgroups," with the number growing daily.  Your Pipeline USA software is
  100. initialized with several newsgroups to get you started.  Explore the
  101. thousands of newsgroups that proliferate the Internet.  Interested in a
  102. specific subject?  Chances are very good that a news  group already exists
  103. for you to share your views and benefit from the  views and advice of others.

  105. If you find participation in the wide world of USENET intimidating, we
  106. suggest you start out getting your feet wet by participating in Pipeline
  107. USA's own newsgroups (listed under the category "local").  Meet some of your
  108. fellow subscribers and feel free to jump right into the conversation.  When
  109. you feel ready to step into the actual USENET newsgroups, the world will be
  110. waiting for you!

  112. There are several Pipeline-specific newsgroups:

  119. Click on the newspaper icon to get to news groups.

  121. HINT:  Update your newsgroup lists!  Click on the News Icon. From the
  122. "Actions" pull down menu select  "Add a new group."  Then select Download
  123. the Newsgroup List.  Pipeline will download the current newsgroup list when
  124. you select the category of the groups you are interested in.  You can then
  125. scroll through that list to find the groups that  interest you.

  128. THE WORLD WIDE WEB

  131. The World Wide Web is one of the Internet's coolest features.  It offers a
  132. graphical, easily navigable, "view" of the Internet.  Each web page has
  133. links to other web pages to provide endless hours of surfing the web.  You
  134. can get access to the World Wide Web through Pipeline USA's own web browser,
  135. which is the "Web" icon on the right of the main menu.  You will also see
  136. other items in Pipeline USA menus that have little web icons next to them.
  137. These are other points where you can directly access the world wide web.

  140. IRC - Internet Relay Chat  
  141. -----------------------------------------------------

  143. At any time during the day and night there are thousands of people partying,
  144. chatting with each other in Internet Relay Chat.  These are people from all
  145. over the world gathering together to talk about anything and everything.
  146. They create "channels" or "chat-rooms" with names in keeping with what
  147. they're talking about.  Most are open and everyone is encouraged to join in
  148. the fun, typing back and forth to each other.  In any channel there e can be
  149. many conversations going on at the same time, but the participants know who's
  150. talking to whom!  By clicking on Internet (Chat IRC) from the Pipeline main
  151. menu, you too can join in the fun.

  154. WINSOCK

  157. Winsock allows you to use various Winsock compliant Internet applications
  158. such as Netscape, Mosaic, mIRC, RealAudio, and WS_FTP.   While Pipeline USA
  159. does supply you with many useful Internet features, you may want to explore
  160. using additional ones.

  163. BELLS & WHISTLES

  166. Pipeline's "startup" bookmark will automatically go to any web page or gopher
  167. menu that you tell it to.  Once you get to a place on the Internet that you
  168. want to frequent, click on "Bookmarks!" from the pulldown menu and the a
  169. bookmark for that location will be added to your bookmark file.  To put it in
  170. the Startup folder, click on Bookmarks!, find the desired entry and drag that
  171. bookmark into the Startup folder.  Pipeline will start it up every time you
  172. log on.

  174. UUencoded newsgroup articles -- alt.binaries newsgroups which contain
  175. pictures and graphics can be decoded so you can view them or save it if it's
  176. a file.  All you need to do is highlight the file you want to get, select get
  177. UU-encoded articles under the "Action" pull-down menu and follow the
  178. instructions in the window.

  180. See who is on-line with you, by city, or by username by clicking "Pipeline
  181. USA & Account Information."

  183. A great way to learn about others' interests and possibly make new friends is
  184. to create a personal profile so that others can see what you have to say
  185. about yourself.  Tell others who you are, what you do, and what you like!

  187. Pipeline's Talk feature lets you "page" another Pipeline user for a private
  188. 2-way chat!  From the main menu click "Services", Talk (chat with someone).

  190. Pipeline has a sophisticated mail filtering system that allows you to
  191. redirect or save messages and newsgroup postings based upon who they're from,
  192. the date, or the subject.
